๐ Expert Advice
Grow in deep, loose, well-drained soil to prevent misshapen roots; remove stones and break up compaction to at least 25โ30 cm. Aim for a fertile soil with plenty of well-rotted organic matter and a slightly acidic to neutral pH (about 6.0โ7.5). Avoid fresh manure and excessive nitrogen, which promotes leafy growth and can reduce root quality.
Sow thinly 1โ2 cm deep in rows; beet seed is a multigerm cluster so thin seedlings to one plant every ~10 cm (use thinnings as baby leaves). Space rows about 25โ30 cm. Make successive sowings every 2โ3 weeks for continuity. Prefer cool conditions and even moisture; avoid fresh manure and hard, stony soil to reduce forking. If starting under cover, sow into cells/modules and transplant young with minimal root disturbance.
Incorporate well-rotted manure or compost before sowing, then use a balanced granular fertilizer at low-to-moderate rates. Avoid high-nitrogen feeding (excess leaf growth, poorer roots). If growth is slow, apply a light side-dress when plants are 10โ15 cm tall and keep potassium adequate for root development; correct boron deficiency where known (common on sandy/high-pH soils) using appropriate, carefully dosed amendments.
Mulch after seedlings are established to conserve moisture and reduce weed competition. Use a light, clean straw mulch or similar, keeping mulch a few centimeters away from the crown to reduce rot; in hot weather, maintain mulch to limit soil temperature swings that can stress roots.
No staking is normally required. Keep beds weed-free and soil evenly moist to prevent plants rocking and to support steady root growth.
No pruning required. For root harvest, twist/cut foliage off leaving a short stem (about 2โ3 cm) to reduce bleeding; avoid removing many leaves during growth as this can check root development.
