๐ Expert Advice
Sow after risk of frost or start under cover to extend the season. For trays/pots: sow 1 seed per 7-10 cm pot, 2-3 cm deep, in warm conditions (approx. 18-21ยฐC) and keep evenly moist; transplant outdoors only when nights are mild and soil warm, after 7-10 days hardening off. For direct sowing: sow 2-3 seeds per station (or small mound) 2-3 cm deep in fertile, well-drained soil, in full sun; thin out until the plant is strongest. Incorporate plenty of compost or well-decomposed manure before planting, and water the plants regularly during establishment and fruit filling.
Kuri red squash (Cucurbita maxima) can be trellised on a very strong trellis or fence to save space. Tie young vines loosely as they grow and provide solid support for the plant's weight; support developing fruit with slings (e.g. fabric or netting) to prevent stems breaking. Ensure excellent sun exposure and air circulation, and anchor the trellis well (vines and fruit become heavy).
Pinch or prune sparingly: cut back excessively long runners if necessary and limit to ~2-3 fruits per plant for better pruning; remove damaged leaves to improve air circulation.
