About Christmas Rose
Christmas rose (Helleborus niger) is an evergreen, winter-flowering hellebore valued for its nodding, cup-like blooms that often open around late winter. It is a hardy perennial for shaded woodland-style gardens, with leathery foliage and long-lived clumps. All parts are poisonous if ingested and the sap can irritate skin.

๐ Expert Advice
Plant in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil; Christmas rose prefers neutral to alkaline (often lime-rich) conditions. Improve heavy clay with sharp grit and organic matter to prevent winter waterlogging; avoid very acidic, waterlogged sites. Set crowns at soil level and avoid frequent transplanting.
Feed modestly: apply compost as a spring top-dressing, or a balanced slow-release fertilizer at label rate in early spring after flowering. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds that drive soft growth; maintain steady fertility rather than heavy feeding.
Top-dress annually with a thin mulch of leaf mold or well-rotted compost in autumn or late winter; keep mulch off the crown to reduce rot. Mulch conserves moisture and slowly improves soil structure in the cool, woodland-like conditions it prefers.
Do not prepare Christmas rose as an herbal tea/infusion. The plant is toxic and not used as a safe beverage infusion.
In late winter remove old, damaged leaves at the base to display flowers and reduce leaf-spot; deadhead spent blooms/seed heads if self-seeding is not desired.
