๐ Expert Advice
Grow in acidic to neutral soil that retains moisture but is well-drained and humus-rich. Incorporate organic matter (e.g. composted bark or leaf mold equivalents) before planting, avoid calcareous or alkaline soils and ensure drainage to avoid waterlogging while keeping the root zone constantly moist.
This is a named cultivar and will not reproduce from seed; commercial propagation is usually by grafting (sometimes by layering). Plant nursery stock (container or rootball) in autumn or early spring, during the dormant season. Plant at the same depth as in the pot, in humus-rich soil (preferably neutral to acidic) that retains moisture but is well drained. Water abundantly after planting, maintain regular humidity during establishment, and mulch to retain moisture while keeping the mulch away from the base of the stems.
Feed lightly in early spring with a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer; avoid excess nitrogen, which promotes sluggish growth and reduces flowering. Where soils are thin, top-dress with well-decomposed manure or maintain fertility with organic mulch; treat chlorosis on high pH soils by improving acidity rather than feeding heavily.
Apply a 5-8 cm mulch of bark or wood chips over the root zone to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature; keep the mulch a few centimetres from the main stems. Top up every year, especially after winter.
Generally self-supporting. Stake only newly planted specimens in very exposed/windy sites: use a single low stake and flexible ties, allowing slight movement; remove after 1 or 2 growing seasons, once roots are established.
Keep pruning to a minimum. Immediately after flowering, remove dead, damaged or crossed wood, as well as suckers below the graft. Avoid heavy pruning, as witch hazel blooms on older wood and may react slowly to heavy cutting.
