About Scindapsus

Scindapsus is a genus of climbing aroids (Araceae family) native to tropical and subtropical Asia and parts of the western Pacific, where species typically grow as hepiphytes in rainforests. Plants start life by crawling or climbing up tree trunks and other supports, producing adventitious roots that adhere to the bark. Many species show a strong change between juvenile and adult: juvenile leaves may lie against the substrate ("shingling") and are often smaller, while adult foliage becomes larger and freer to cling. Leaves are alternate, usually leathery, and often variegated or silvery mottled in some cultivated forms. Like other aroids, Scindapsus bears inflorescences composed of a spadix of tiny flowers surmounted by a spathe, but flowering is rare in typical indoor conditions.

πŸ“ Expert Advice

🌱 Soil Advice:

Use a loose, aerated, fast-draining aroid/epiphyte substrate that remains slightly moist but never soggy. A suitable mix is coco-coir or a peat-based potting soil, cut with pieces of orchid bark and perlite/peat moss (possibly a little sphagnum moss/leaf mold and horticultural charcoal) to increase porosity and oxygen around the roots. Use a pot with a drainage system; avoid dense garden soil and mixtures that remain saturated. A slightly acidic to neutral pH is generally suitable.

🌾 Sowing Advice:

Scindapsus is rarely grown from seed; most plants are established by vegetative propagation. Planting (potted houseplant) - Place the plant in a small pot with drainage, using a free-draining aroid mix (e.g. peat/coco-based compost amended with orchid bark and perlite/potato). - Place the plant at the same depth as it was growing before; firm up slightly and water to the end, then let the excess drain away. - Provide warm temperatures (around 18-27Β°C), bright, filtered light (avoid direct sunlight) and moderate to high humidity. Maintain even, but not soggy, humidity; allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Multiplication instead of sowing (recommended) - Take stem cuttings with at least 1 node (and ideally 1 to 2 leaves). Remove the lowest leaf and place the node in water or in a moist, aerated propagation medium (e.g. sphagnum/perlite mix or a mixture of aroids). - Maintain a high temperature (approx. 22-27Β°C), high humidity and soft light. Re-pot once a strong root system has formed. If seeds are obtained (uncommon) - Sow fresh seeds on the surface of a thin, moist, sterile medium; cover very lightly (seeds are generally more or less sensitive to light) and maintain a constant temperature (approx. 24-28Β°C) and high humidity. - Provide bright, indirect light and good air exchange to reduce seedling damping-off; transplant and pot once seedlings are large enough to handle.

πŸ§ͺ Fertilizer Advice:

During the active growth period (spring to early autumn), give a complete, balanced indoor plant fertilizer (e.g. 10-10-10 or 20-20-20) diluted 1/4-1/2, approximately every 4-6 weeks (or at a very low dose with more frequent watering). Interrupt or greatly reduce fertilization in winter or in low-light conditions, when growth slows down. Apply to potting soil that is already moist, to prevent root burn and avoid over-fertilization (sluggish, weak growth and leaf-edge burn). Rinse the pot periodically with clean water (e.g. every 2 or 3 months) to reduce fertilizer and salt build-up; a light top-dressing with a slow-release fertilizer can be used instead, following the rates indicated on the label.

πŸ—οΈ Staking Advice:

Optional, can be staked with sphagnum moss or coconut fibre for larger leaves.

βœ‚οΈ Pruning:

Prune Scindapsus to control length and encourage bushier growth by pinching or cutting back trailing stems. Make clean cuts just above a leaf node (where an aerial leaf/root emerges); new shoots usually form from the nearest node below the cut. Remove yellowed or damaged leaves by cutting the petiole close to the stem. For light plants with long, bare sections, shorten the vines and re-root the cuttings: take stem sections of 1 to 3 nodes (preferably with an aerial root), remove the lowest leaf and root them in water, moist sphagnum moss or a well-aerated potting mix; replant them in the pot to thicken the plant. Prune more heavily during the active growth period (spring to summer); prune as little as possible in winter. Use sharp, sterilized tools and avoid leaving stumps; wipe sap from tools and hands, as AracΓ©e sap can irritate the skin.
